Why convert AVIF to JPG if AVIF is the better format?
Compatibility. AVIF is genuinely more efficient, but plenty of older software, upload forms and document pipelines still only accept JPG. Converting is about reaching the destination, not about quality.
What happens to transparent regions?
They become solid white, since JPG has no alpha channel. Use AVIF to PNG instead if the transparency matters.
Which is the smaller file, the AVIF or the JPG?
Almost always the AVIF — often half the size at equal quality. The JPG is still worth having when the receiving system demands it.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser and the JPG is saved directly to your device.
