What exactly is a HEIC file?
It is the format iPhones use by default: a HEIF container holding an HEVC-encoded image. It saves space at the same quality, but outside Apple’s ecosystem support is patchy.
How can a browser convert HEIC at all?
This page loads a WebAssembly build of a HEIF decoder on demand, then feeds the decoded image to the Canvas API. The decoder runs inside your browser — your photo never leaves your device.
Why will my browser not just open the file?
Only Safari decodes HEIC natively. Chrome, Firefox and Edge do not, which is why the file downloads fine from iCloud but refuses to open on a Windows PC.
Are EXIF data and Live Photo motion kept?
No. The conversion extracts the still image and writes a fresh JPG, so GPS location, camera EXIF metadata and the Live Photo video track are not carried over.
